Family leaves - best when shared
We promote gender equality and family friendliness in working life. Our way of doing it is to help people find concrete solutions.
In 2022, fathers used only 12.2% of the parental allowance days in Finland, so the equal distribution of caregiving responsibilities and family leave is not yet a reality. Which is exactly why we want to highlight the positive aspects of sharing family leave equally!
Check out our brand new guidebook ‘Best when shared’ for negotiating the share of parental leave with your partner!
Did you know that according to research, sharing parental leave and unpaid care and housework between parents is profitable? Sharing them equally is beneficial because:
for 85 percent of families with two working parents, it is more financially viable
the attachment relationship between father/other parent and child deepens
relationship satisfaction increases and the risk of divorce decreases
sharing the responsibility of caring for the child has a favorable effect on the coping and well-being of parents
both parents have the opportunity to spend valuable time with the child at home
mothers' experience of parenting exhaustion decreases
women's salary, pension accrual and position in working life improve when the mother doesn’t bear the responsibility for the family leave alone
MiB coordinates a three-year project, Equal family leave (Yhdenvertaisesti perhevapailla) which aims at a more even distribution of family leave in two-parent families and encourages companies to take a positive stance towards parental leaves.
